I haven't done this kind of drawing in a very long time so yesterday after working on a commissioned portrait I decided to play a little. I like the soft spidery base of gesso on Masonite board. After I have put a few coats on I lay some pastel dust down on the board where the shadows are and where I will be scratching to add lights. It is the same as doing scratch board but with this I get a smokey look. I can add darks, erase or scratch lights, and it is easy to fix if I haven't scratched too far down. I use an X-acto #2 knife to scratch and kneadable to make the values. It is a lot of fun and I am sure there are be others that will find great ways to modify and add to this process.
