Here is Katy. She was done in pastel on gesso board. 

Here is how I started her. Just laying out the sizes and basic under color. 

Now I start defining areas and putting shapes where they belong.

As I add more details I am constantly checking size, shapes, and locations of her body parts. I am always trying to be sure that I am connected to the feeling of the character and my inner judgements about what is right and what isn't.
